Die Forelle

by Franz Schubert

Poem by Christian Schubart

Year composed 1817

Listening Guide

Even though it’s better known as the theme for the variation movement of the ‘Trout’ Quintet,’ this gem of a song is a minor masterpiece in its own right. The jutting chromatic figures in the piano part cleverly paint the swimming of the trout and the flowing of the brook. The only change in this texture comes in the final verse, which describes the mini-drama of the fisherman catching the poor trout.
