Known for his “stentorian tenor” and “over-the-top committed” portrayals, tenor Dylan Morrongiello is a prominent force in the highly sought-after supporting repertoire of the operatic canon, as well as the recital and concert stage. Mr. Morrongiello made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2021 as the Dean of the Faculty in Massenet’s Cinderella and has been a member of the artist roster for the past three seasons which included performances in The Magic Flute and Brett Dean’s Hamlet, and covers in Le nozze di Figaro and The Rake’s Progress. An avid supporter of the art song repertory, Mr. Morrongiello is a seasoned recitalist and interpreter of art song, especially American song. This is Dylan’s third appearance with the Brooklyn Art Song Society, where he last appeared singing selections of Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch in 2023. In 2021, he performed works by Iain Bell and Ian Venables with the company. Mr. Morrongiello also recently joined the Cincinnati Song Initiative in their recital residencies at The Hartt School and Ithaca College where he worked with and performed the music of Lori Laitman and John Musto, respectively. Recent engagements include the North American premiere of Sven-David Sandström’s setting of the Messiah with Cantata Singers and the New England Philharmonic, as well as creating the role of the Monk in Jorge Sosa’s Monkey: A Kung Fu Puppet Parable with White Snake Projects. Other engagements include Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte (Lyric Opera of Chicago, Arizona Opera); Beppe in Pagliacci (St. Petersburg Opera Company); Miles Zegner in Proving Up (Opera Las Vegas); Schoolmaster/Mosquito in The Cunning Little Vixen (The Glimmerglass Festival); Goro in Madama Butterfly (Central City Opera); and Don Basilio/Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro (Florida Grand Opera, Opera Saratoga). In concert, Mr. Morrongiello has performed as the tenor soloist in Bach’s St. John’s Passion and Magnificat (Bach Society Houston), and the Evangelist in St. Matthew’s Passion (Rice Chorale).
Mr. Morrongiello is a past winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition Houston district, and an Encouragement Award winner in the Gulf Coast Region. Mr. Morrongiello holds a Masters of Voice from the prestigious Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he was a recipient of the Elva Kalb Dumas Prize in Music, and holds a Bachelors from the University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. Mr. Morrongiello is a graduate of the young artist programs at Central City Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, Florida Grand Opera, and Opera Saratoga.
