Fischerweise

by Franz Schubert

Poem by Franz von Schlechta

Year composed 1826

Listening Guide

The character of the fisher appears in many of Schubert’s most cheerful songs- see Die Forelle above and also Das Fischermadchen from Schwanengesang. The ever moving eighth notes in the piano part represent both the congenial mood of the fisher and also the movement of the brook. In the opening of the song the left hand exchanges a little melody between two octaves. This motif returns later in the song in the vocal line- it is indeed the “fisherman’s ditty.”
